Hey Guys,
Researchers in Maryland have discovered some very scary data about the ammount of waste Americans waste each year. We, as a country, waste about 40 percent of our food supply by throwing it out. This food we waste accounts for about a quarter of fresh water supply and millions of barrels of oil. It also releases methane when the food rots, which is much more worse for the environment than carbon dioxide. A pretty interesting article if you get a chance to read it.

Nuclear Power
Hey Guys,
Found this article on the Economist and it was very interesting. Everyone is pushing for nuclear power but this like coal and other fossil fuels is also a finite source of energy. Pretty interesting article.

Nov. 16th Blog
Hey Guys,
I came across this interesting new discovery with fluid motion called, "Lagrangian Coherent Structures." These things govern the distribution of pollution, migration of jellyfish, paths taken by hurricanes and so much more. Pretty interesting.

November 9th Post
What's up class,
I found this article about satellites getting data for farmers on soils to help them increase their crop growth. It's crazy what these satellites can do.

New Ideas for Global Health
Hey guys,
I was checking out some sites and I came across an article about funding for new ideas to create a healthier world. Some ideas that are up for funding include a chewing gum that can sense malaria via a solar-activated larva inside it and there was a also a cell phone idea that uses the microphone to record coughs to send it to doctors to diagnose the illness.
Check it out,
Vince

A Battery Made From Cellulose
Hey guys,
I was checking out some sites and read an article about a batter made from stuff paper is made out of, Cellulose. It is not typical cellulose from trees or cotton though, but it is found in algae and coated with a special coating to make it conductive. It is not developed enough for commercial use but is showing good signs for use in the future.

Nobel Prize for Physics
Hey guys,
I was checking out some sites and came across the Nobel Prize for physics was awarded to Dr. Charles Kao for doing some pretty interesting things with fiber optics and pretty much seeing through walls.

Hey Guys,
In class we were talking about something that could make the quality of a persons life better. Although this doesn't effect people in third world countries it does help patients lives better who require dialysis because their livers do not function. They have created a portable machine that does what once only hospitals could do with a rather large machine that took several hours to cleanse the blood.

Bio Fuel
Hey guys,
I was checking out the economist and read this article on ethanol and a great source of it that many people have been overlooking. Americans have tried corn in the Midwest but that never really worked out too well. The overlooked source is actually the waste we create in our everyday lives. Using it would allow Americans to produce half of the required biodiesel by 2022 as it says in the new energy requirement. Check it out.

New Machine to Launch Rescue Boats
Hey guys,
I found this article about this new machine that helps get lifeboats in the water during bad weather. What happens is that the tide is usually low and it leaves the terrain all boggy which can make moving a gigantic rescue boat quite tricky. This machine can move the boat from a to b even through the poor terrain near the water. Check it out

Second Post
Hey guys,
I was reading the economist and I found this article on Earthquake resistant bridges. They allow the bridge to still be usable after it is damaged by a quake so emergency crews can still use the roadways and so it can save some lives. It is made using a "Shape Memory"alloy so it can actually remember what it was supposed to look like after it is deformed from the quake.

First Post
Hey guys,
This is my first blog. I was checking out the international herald tribune and came across this new LED light called OLED's or Organic Light Emitting Diodes. Instead of a just a point source light its a sheet of light that is only .07 inches thick and is flexible. It's pretty cool, check it out.
